  Dear visitors,

It is our pleasure to announce that thanks to you we are now able to give away more computers to the community. Now even more elderly homes, daycare centers, and community associations will benefit from ERA's donation program.

ERA is here for the community. Any Alberta based charities can contact us to receive computers for their libraries, community access rooms, or office.

If you have a personal computer to drop off, please make sure to drop it off at a location that will ensure it will be reused and donated here.

If your company wants to donate old computers to this program can also contact us.

  Attention Calgary:

Thanks to donations from many of Calgary's corporate giants and some branches of government ERA was able to meet the 2005/06 milestone of computers donated into the community. Many elderly homes, daycare homes, libraries and community centers were setup thanks to donations from corporations, governments and individuals.

In 2006/07 ERA's and communities need for computers is greater than 100,000 computers and laptops. ERA will be issuing large appeals on behalf of our donation recipients in the near future for donations of computers and laptops. Computers no longer needed by many large companies, government departments and individuals can still be very beneficial. Ask us how, where, or if you are ready to donate or recycle your computers now, please fill out the pickup form here.

  Attention Edmonton:

ERA is currently in need of 1000's of computers and laptops for donations to many non profit and charitable organizations. Please contact our office for a list of needy places, or fill out the pickup form here.

  Attention Vancouver:

ERA is in the process of moving into a new warehouse. We will only be able to service our members in the that time. We are moving into a large warehouse in downtown Vancouver,BC.

ERA is currently in desperate need of laptops, routers, and computers for many of our projects to setup libraries and community access centers in lower income communities, non profit organizations, charitable organizations in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and world wide. Our request list now breaches one thousand requests for laptops, routers, and desktop computers.

Alberta's Hockey team, second to none: GO OILERS GO!

Attention Edmonton: We are currently restructuring our Edmonton depot and are in desperate need of a bonded driver and volunteers. Volunteers can earn a computer or computers for their time or even just help out. Volunteers can help us setup many computers to donate to charities and non profit groups in Edmonton who are currently on a large waiting list to receive them.

March 2006. ERA and many of its corporate donors in Calgary provide 1,000 refurbished computers into the community. Many local charities, non profit groups, elderly homes, poor people are enabled access to computers and technology. It is one of ERA's goals to ensure that nobody in our society is excluded by not having access to computers. Calgary's many corporate giants realize that their old computers may not be good enough for them anymore, but many charities and non profits can still benefit from them. ERA's new Vancouver Computer and Electronics Depot is starting to collect computers from Vancouver's corporate giants who are slowly starting to realize the social and environmental difference by reusing and recycling their old computers.

ALBERTA - CANADA - March, 2006. *** Over 63,000 monitors, 60,000 computers, 33,500 printers"  have been recycled in Alberta since the beginning of the ARMA and Alberta Government "Electronic Recycling Program".

After months and even years of ERA insisting that those computers are tested for the functionality or reusability or useful components ARMA has so far done nothing about this. Thousands of computers are disposed of by large universities, colleges, government departments and large corporations into this government ran recycling program.

Unfortunately the contractors the government has chosen take profits before helping people. They in turn recycle these computers into dust, eliminating thousands of possible opportunities for poor and disadvantaged people to access technology and computers. Tens of thousands of these computers could have been in poor peoples homes, in local charities, and not to mention in thousands of homes and businesses in 3rd world countries. Another example is that actually recycling these computers is more environmentally hazardous than reusing them is a big reason to keep using these valuable learning tools.

ERA hereby calls for an immediate halt of the government recycling program and the taxes they collect for recycling for independent review and assessment, to ensure no working computers are being recycled and not reused.

Various charities in Alberta are scheduled to receive donations in February and March. We are currently recruiting volunteers in each city to assist with setting up several hundred working computers to donate to local charities, non profit groups, seniors centers, etc. You can even earn a computer for helping, or just help. ERA joins Alberta Government's Alberta's Promise initiative, aimed at inspiring and encouraging businesses, agencies, communities, and individuals to adopt the Alberta's promise commitment to children. ERA is a supporter of many children oriented and other charities and non profit groups in need of computers. It is a great shame to have children not be able to use a computer at their daycare, school or home in Alberta or elsewhere. It is one of ERA's goals to ensure that every child can use a computer all across Alberta and world wide. Computers are very valuable learning tools and children and individuals deprived of computers are at a disadvantage.

We wish everyone happy holidays. This holiday season is special for ERA as we are just opening our Vancouver depot location. During the holidays we will be taking some time off and wish to reassure all of our supporters and members that 2006 brings new things and fully operational ERA depots across Canada. Happy holidays from everyone at ERA.

The holiday season brings many requests to ERA for donations of computers and laptops. In 2005 we fell short of collecting our goal of 60,000 computers and monitors by approximately 30,000 complete units. In the last few weeks of this year ERA is making that extra effort to collect more computers and laptops to use in our programs. In 2006 we aim to collect 150,000 computer sets and laptops in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver to use in our donation programs, and to prevent from ending up in the landfills by being properly recycled.

ERA donates some refurbished computers to Calgary's St. Mary Church, after the church was robbed a few days ago, and their computers stolen. ERA was able to immediately replace the stolen computers with some computers that were donated to our program.

Calgary's Drop in Center is also receiving some donated computers from our program. The Drop in Center has a program to provide working computers to new home owners and renters coming from the Drop In Center.

ERA has been raising the issue of reuse and recycling in Alberta for the past few years. We have always been the innovators and always worked on improving. Recently with the introduction of a government administered recycling program, ERA has struggled to collect working computers and monitors. The governments contractors and designated administrators of the recycling program are more focused on profits, rather than the environment or recycling. For example it pays to smash a computer, rather than giving it to a charity to use. Quote Alberta Recycling Authority"*** 49,914 monitors, 46,879 computers, 26,301 printers and 22,000 televisions have been recycled" None of these computers or electronics have been tested or any parts reused. All computers were destroyed at a very large cost to Alberta. Tens of thousands of these computers could have been in poor peoples homes, in local charities, and not to mention in thousands of homes and businesses in 3rd world countries. Another example is that actually recycling these computers is more environmentally hazardous that reusing them is a big reason to keep using these valuable learning tools.

ERA hereby calls for an immediate halt of the government recycling program and the taxes they collect for recycling for independent review and assessment, to ensure no working computers are being recycled and not reused.

ERA is announcing some major changes to our program. Individuals and organization that wish to drop off computers and electronics for donation or recycling can now directly donate to ERA at our Computer and Electronics Depot locations in Calgary and Edmonton.
